About Sustainability Efforts in Fennville
We're working on transforming the way we think about sustainability and accountability throughout the City. We participate in the Michigan Green Challenges, and last year earned a Silver Designee towards our efforts to planning for sustainability in the future.
The Fennville City Commission also has formed a sustainability committee, to bring an increased focus on questions of sustainability to our local governmental processes. The committee was heavily involved in the drafting of Fennville's new sustainability plan.

Sustainability Projects
Michigan local governments leading in the area of sustainability have unique challenges as they pioneer and implement new programs and technologies. The Catalyst Leadership Circle (CLC) Fellowship is designed to help these communities reach their climate and energy goals while developing a pipeline of passionate, capable students ready to enter the workforce in sustainability careers after gaining hands-on, applied knowledge.
Selected through a competitive application process, graduate-level CLC Fellows assist host communities on advanced projects. These students, who come from academic programs across the state, help communities take tangible steps toward their sustainability goals while creating shareable deliverables that can be utilized by other jurisdictions in the future.
The City of Fennville has had two summer projects in 2025 and 2026.
2026 Research - Hutchins Lake Improvement Association Septic Systems Survey
The goal of this project is to help the City of Fennville evaluate the ecological, infrastructure, and community considerations associated with extending municipal sewer and water service. The project will examine the environmental risks and limitations of continued reliance on private septic systems/wells, the potential benefits and drawbacks of transitioning to municipal utilities, and the consequences of both action and inaction.
Our fellow conducted a survey of lake residents, the results of which can be found below. He also prepared a guide towards maintaining septic systems in the future.
We hope to use this work in the future to apply for a feasibility study grant in order to get additional needed information on cost, implementation, etc. The results of that feasibility study will be voted upon by the residents impacted before any decisions are made.
